Flags in Sanctuary
Adopted 10/14/12 Board Meeting
Various members have expressed their opinions about whether to have both, just one, or neither the American and Israeli flags in the sanctuary. After discussion, the board determined that flags are political in nature and that the placement of both flags should instead be in the Temple Social Hall.
Non-Jewish Funeral
Board Resolutions passed 10/14/12
Concern brought to the board:
Married couple in which one spouse is Jewish and the other has not converted to Judaism and is not an active participant in any other religion. The question presented was “can the non-Jewish spouse have a Jewish funeral”. Bernice researched this with her brother, Rabbi Marc Angel, who advised that “There's no problem fashioning a funeral service with Jewish components for a non-Jewish person. The Jewish funeral basically includes selections from the Bible e.g. Psalms, which apply to any human being. I'm not sure what service is "usual" in your community, but I imagine it could easily be tailored to fit the needs of a non-Jewish person.” The Board, after discussion, adopted the following resolution:
In situations where a non-Jewish spouse dies and the Jewish member requests a Jewish funeral, a funeral service fashioned with Jewish components can be an available option.
